While artisanal mining is widespread across much of the countryside, the government is also promoting large-scale projects to formalize and regulate the sector. This growing combination of methods underscores Uganda’s emerging reputation as one of East Africa’s most promising gold producers.
Gold Mining History
In June 2022, a significant discovery of 31 million metric tonnes of gold in Uganda, among other discoveries, was reported, bolstering confidence in the sector’s development prospects. Geological surveys and explorations have identified rich reserves in districts such as Mubende, Buhweju, and Karamoja, with Mubende emerging as a focus for artisanal miners. Already, Busia has been noted for its growing gold mining activities, and Karamoja is considered rich in both alluvial and hard-rock deposits. These regions are attracting investment, and ongoing explorations suggest that Uganda may possess much larger reserves.
However, for Uganda’s gold mining sector, the road ahead is still fraught with challenges. These include substandard facilities and limited mechanization, environmental problems associated with open-pit and alluvial mining methods, and issues arising when artisanal miners are left to their own devices without sufficient technical or financial support.
