Gold Mining methods and Exports in Uganda
Mining gold in Uganda is one of the primary economic activities attracting income, steadily developing in the regional mineral sector. Uganda is witnessing excellent results over the last five years, with gold exports hitting $571m (about Shs2.1 trillion). according to records released in July 2019, placing the precious mineral among Uganda’s top foreign exchange earners. Small- and artisanal-scale miners working with little more than shovels in hand-dug pits have been dominating the industry for years, wreaking significant environmental havoc but producing little gold. 20-21announcement of the presence on the volcanic island of as many as 31 million tonnes of ore deposits that may be holding up to 320,000 tonnes of refined gold. This announcement positioned Uganda as one of the few highly prospective gold producers in Africa and attracted considerable attention from industrial investors.
Distribution of Mines Across Uganda

Mubende and Kassanda districts are well known for artisanal miners, attracting thousands of them who depend on gold as a source of livelihood. The Kayonza gold belt in Busia is one of Uganda’s best and most promising mining areas, becoming increasingly industrialized through exploration and attracting significant investment. The Karamoja sub-region, which is known for its rich mineral wealth, also has big reserves of gold, but artisan miners are harvesting the minerals. Western Uganda’s Buhweju and Ibanda districts continue to attract substantial artisanal mining activity, supporting small local economies. Namayingo District on the shores of Lake Victoria is meanwhile home to several smaller operations that are adding to the country’s expanding gold scene.

Common Types of gold mining in Uganda

  • Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM)
  • - This one is a major type of gold mining in Uganda, occurring in regions like Mubende, Busia, Buhweju and Karamoja. Manual methods (panning, sluicing and shallow pit) are the means that miners employ. ASM may be an important source of livelihoods, but it is largely informal and difficult to regulate for safety and environmental protection.
  • Alluvial and Placer Mining
  • Gold is washed from sediments along river beds and floodplains in districts such as Namayingo and Karamoja. This type of mining is the main way that gold is extracted from river and creek beds, and it is also a big source of income for small-scale and informal miners. It is low equipment-intensive, but water demand is high.
  • Open-Pit Mining
  • Uganda opened its first largescale open-cast gold mine in 2025, as it moved from informal to industrial mining. Open pit mining cuts away overburden to extract gold bearing ore that sits near the surface. It is a faster way of exploring large deposits, like the ones already confirmed in Busia and Kayonza, to fuel Uganda’s efforts to export more gold.
  • Underground (Hard Rock) Mining
  • In areas where gold deposits lie deeper underground, miners dig shafts or tunnels to access the ore. This method is less common among artisanal miners due to technical and safety demands, but it is used in select sites across Mubende and Busia. Industrial-scale hard rock mining is expected to expand as Uganda attracts more investment following recent significant gold discoveries.
